Neonatal screening

Neonatal screening makes it possible to detect the potential presence of congenital diseases long before symptoms appear. These hereditary metabolic diseases may have real effects on long-term patient health: developmental delays, chronic pain and, in extreme cases, death. Although these diseases are often incurable, they are not untreatable and can be detected with a single blood sample. If started in time, treatments make normal development possible and prevent severe and permanent consequences in children.

Immunoassay

The ELISA and enzymatic techniques are the standards in neonatal screening. These techniques enable the detection of metabolic and endocrine diseases that may cause developmental delays, or even death, in infants. With early detection, prompt management can be implemented, thereby maximizing the newborn’s chances of growing and developing normally. ZenTech markets nine kits using ELISA and enzyme techniques for the detection of eight diseases. To cater for the needs of each type of laboratory, regardless of size, manual or automated kits are available.

Mass Spectrometry

As LC-MS/MS systems are increasingly being used in neonatal screening laboratories, ZenTech has developed new tests to multiplex the biomarkers and simplify detection of many diseases as part of the expanded screening programs for diseases affecting newborns. The new products in the “Targeted MS/MS” range ensure that sensitive and accurate results are obtained quickly and reproducibly.

DNA Analysis

The advances in treatments have made it possible to include new genetic diseases to the panel of diseases eligible for neonatal screening. These diseases can be detected by finding the site of the specific DNA mutation. ZenTech is developing its range and expanding its technology portfolio by adding qPCR to its already reputed enzyme range. The DNA analysis range includes kits for first-line neonatal screening suitable for the use of dried blood samples.

Semi-automation

ZenTech exploits its knowledge and expertise to develop a solution combining reagents, punchers and automated analyzers. From a manual to semi-automated process, the ZenTech solution offers a degree of automation matching the requirements and reality of each laboratory.
